At Mars Nails, we don't use the same approach for every nail repair. We look at the product that's there, the natural nail shape, the sidewalls and free edges and where we need extra support. These four real appointments below are a good illustration of how we decide on the prep, the gel structure and the finish for the nails.
Rebuilding an Almond Shape with Builder Gel
This client arrived with dip powder on her nails and wanted an almond shape. After removing the old material, we evened out the length and refined the sidewalls to give the nails a consistent shape across the hand.
We used builder gel to restore the outline where needed, then finished the nails in a natural nude 05 shade. The understated color makes the shaping and even finish easy to see.
Why we took this approach: The priority was an even almond shape after removal, not simply a new color. Builder gel let us refine the outline and add structure where it was needed.
A Shorter, Sharper Almond with Purple Cat Eye
The starting nails were long. We reduced the length by roughly half, reshaped the free edges into a sharper almond, and adjusted the gel structure for the new proportions.
Once the shape and structure were set, we applied the purple magnetic cat-eye finish. The reflective effect draws attention, but the shorter length and consistent silhouette are the main changes between the two photographs.
Why we took this approach: Shortening the nails changes their proportions, so we adjusted the shape and supporting structure before applying the decorative finish.
Localized Hard Gel Support Under a Thin Red Finish
In this appointment the concern was concentrated at the tips of the nails. The free edges were thin so we completed Russian manicure preparation and reinforced the tips with hard gel where additional support was needed.
We then applied the red gel color in a thin layer. The finished manicure looks simple, but the work underneath the color was specific to the condition of the free edges. A thick overlay across every nail was not the goal of this appointment.
Why we took this approach: We focused the extra support on the tips, the area that needed it, while keeping the visible color layer thin.
Overfiled Sidewalls, Lifting, and a Natural-Length Finish
This client arrived with lifting in the previous material and sidewalls that had been filed too far. We removed the existing product, addressed the shape along the sides, and supported the client's own nail length.
We finished with a thin soft-gel coating in deep burgundy. The photographs show a tidier nail outline and a smooth, even finish without adding extensions. The goal was to work carefully with the length the client already had.
Why we took this approach: The condition of the sidewalls and the lifting product determined our preparation. We worked with the client's natural length instead of adding extensions. To understand the difference between the materials used in cases 3 and 4, read our Hard Gel vs Soft Gel guide.
What These Four Appointments Have in Common
None of these clients needed exactly the same work. At Mars Nails, the preparation and product choice begin with the condition of the nails, not one standard amount of gel for every appointment.
- Existing material matters. Dip powder and lifting product needed to be addressed before applying a new finish.
- Shape and length affect structure. Shortening a nail or rebuilding a sidewall changes what the technician has to balance.
- Extra support can be localized. Thin free edges may require attention at the tips instead of a bulky coating over the whole nail.
- The finish comes last. Nude, purple cat eye, red, and burgundy were different visual choices applied after the underlying preparation.
A nail repair with gel can improve shape, add support, or rebuild the appearance of a missing area. It does not reverse damage within the natural nail plate. The appropriate technique depends on the condition of the nails at the appointment.
